Use a fence to keep children from using the pool when unattended.

Daylight Savings Time means more sun, and more sun means welcoming more time in our day to spend with our families and friends outdoors while lounging around the backyard pool.  At Sunset Pools and Spas, we advocate safety first, and although we know our clients can’t wait to take advantage of the approaching warm season and utilize their hibernating swimming pool, we want to make sure that all pool safety hazards have been addressed.  One of the biggest pool safety concerns is protecting young children from accidental injuries or drowning; on average, the United States reports a statistic of 350 children who accidentally drown in swimming pools every year.  That is an astounding number, and one that can be significantly lowered if pool owners took it upon themselves to learn more about pool safety and how to prevent such tragic accidents.

The biggest risk factor of accidental drownings in pools is the lack of a barrier.  Most children who have drowned in swimming pools were left unsupervised for no more than five minutes!  Having a barrier, such as a safety fence, around a pool will effectively keep children away and prevent any accidental drowning.  Parents can relax, knowing that their children won’t fall into the pool if left unsupervised.

Does your pool have cracks like this? Sunset Pools and Spas can fix it!

A common problem that California pool owners often encounter is cracked concrete. Though we live in an earthquake-susceptible state, cracked concrete in pools, contrary to popular belief, is not usually caused by earthquakes, but instead by something called expansive soil.  Expansive soil occurs when the soil underneath the pool deck gets wet, causing water to leak and expand the deck.  Of course, with so much activity going on, something has to give in, and usually the victim is the concrete.  Cracked concrete can not only inflict ugly cracks in your pool, but can, over time, damage a pool’s structure.

There are many causes of expansive soil, the most common being poor workmanship.  An installer could have poured the concrete too early while it was still wet, or could have overlooked installing necessary reinforcing steel in the concrete.  Fortunately, there are ways to fix cracked concrete.  The most inexpensive method is by using an actual slate or travertine pavers in order to create a coating over the cracked concrete.

Of course, these methods do not fix the underlying problem of expansive soil! If the concrete continues to shift with the soil problem underneath, pool owners can choose to install a curb underneath the concrete (a moisture barrier) to keep water from leaking any further, thereby mitigating the cracking problem.  Professional pool engineers should always carry out these steps prior to installing the actual pool in order to prevent any future cracked concrete problems.

You’ve seen them—ritzy, sparkling pools teetering ever-so-precariously over a hillside edge over the Hollywood Hills.  How do they do it?  My property is too steep to ever build a pool, you might say. Although it looks impossible, we at Sunset Pools are experts who can help you build that dream pool in your backyard’s hillside.

Hillside pools are any types of pool that require grade beams to support its foundation.  Because we employ only the nation’s best engineers, Sunset Pools can build pools on 45-degree inclines or even higher.  Just hand us the design, and we will build it.  Our portfolio ranges throughout all areas of Southern California, from properties in Laguna Beach all the way to the Pacific Palisades or inland in Anaheim Hills.

An infinity edge pool is the perfect example of a hillside pool.  Taking full advantage of the hillside view, infinity pools have vanishing edges where the water spills over into a hidden reservoir, giving the illusion of a never-ending border. Of course, such an elegant design entails a more complicated construction procedure—more construction materials and engineering pumps are needed, and additional steps are added in order to hide the back wall of the pool to complete the look.  Sometimes, the garden or area down the slope of the property may be hard to access, but we can build infinity-edge basins in a position that creates a lower patio around the pool, so our clients can add furniture and sit with the pool behind them.

Because of all this extra engineering and additional materials, take into account that an infinity pool can add an additional cost to the pool’s construction bill: usually about $1,000 per foot of infinity edge.

Sunset Pools can also do a reverse style of the infinity edge style where we erect a wall against the pool, creating an endless waterfall that instead spills into the pool.  We do this by creating a retaining wall on the hillside behind the pool and using this to create water feature.  Sunset Pools can also take the actual pool and raise it 12-18 inches, allowing the front of the pool to spill inside the housing.  We can also add in modified lighting fixtures inside and around the pool to add ambiance to the environment.
